Points of Interest Quilt Block of the Month – Finished Quilt Top

| |

Hi there! I’m back with another update on my Points of Interest Block of the Month project. Last week I went on a quilt retreat and finished my quilt top! I had all the pieces cut for Blocks G through J before the retreat, so all I had to do was sit, sew, and enjoy the company of some quilty friends.

The quilt finishing instructions are included in the current issue of American Patchwork & Quilting (Issue 200). That issue also includes some really great patriotic projects. I’ve been working on a few patriotic quilts of my own to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

I’m currently designing a new quilt pattern, and I’ve been testing the instructions with a patriotic version… well, actually two! For one quilt, I used fabrics from my stash. For the other, I picked up a jelly roll from Moda Fabrics. I’ll share more about that quilt in my next post, but for now, let’s get back to the Point 🙂

Blocks G & H

I’m making my quilt using the Heirloom collection by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics. I currently have kits available in the Heirloom collection, as well as the original blue and green colorway using the Texture collection by Sandy Gervais for Riley Blake Designs.

Here are all the pieces for Blocks G & H.

There’s very little margin for error when sewing these blocks together. Not having to trim the units is nice, but I still prefer trimming my blocks down to size later. (I may have ripped out Block G because I didn’t want to cut off the points!) Sew carefully and use an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance.

I forgot to take photos of the finished blocks, but you’ll get to see them in the finished quilt below.

Blocks I & J

It was really helpful to have all the pieces for Blocks I & J pre-cut before the retreat because these blocks involve a lot of cutting. These blocks are used in the top and bottom borders of the quilt.

Quilt Assembly

A group of quilting friends has been holding our annual retreats at the Grünewald Guild for the past four years. The Guild is a nonprofit arts education retreat center located on 16 acres of Cascadian woodland along the Wenatchee River in Plain Valley, near Leavenworth.

We had a smaller group this year with just six of us attending. Normally we have about twice that many people, so I had lots of space to spread out my quilt and get everything assembled.

I used a folding table to layout my quilt blocks for final assembly. Look at the view – surrounded by trees.

Finished Quilt

And here is the finished quilt top!

It was a windy day, which made taking photos a little tricky, but I feel like the setting perfectly matched the colors in this quilt. It fits right in with the scenery.

It was such a fun and productive weekend! Now it’s time to call APQS and schedule my longarm appointment.

Are you looking for the full pattern and block downloads? You can find them at All People Quilt. And if you’re interested in a quilt kit, you can grab the Heirloom Points of Interest kit or the original blue and green Texture version in my shop.

Have a wonderful day, quilting friend!
