Speed Up Your Cutting with a Strip Cutting Ruler

Cutting fabric can be one of the most time-consuming parts of quilting, especially when you’re making a project like my Patches & Squares quilt that starts with lots of strip sets. If you’re looking for a way to cut faster and more accurately, I’ve got a tool to recommend: a strip cutting ruler.

I used the Stripology XL Slotted Quilting Ruler by Creative Grids to cut all the strips for this quilt, and it made the whole process quicker, smoother, and surprisingly fun.

What Is a Strip Cutting Ruler?

Strip cutting rulers are large rulers with evenly spaced slots that guide your rotary cutter, making it easy to cut multiple strips without repositioning your fabric or ruler. The Stripology XL is my go-to, it grips the fabric well, has built-in markings for common strip sizes, and saves so much time.

How I Used It for the Patches & Squares Quilt

This pattern starts with a bunch of strip sets that are sub-cut to make 9 patches, so it’s a perfect match for a strip ruler.

Here’s how I used it:

  • Cut all my strips at once, without shifting the ruler
  • Got clean, accurate cuts every time
  • Saved time and reduced cutting fatigue

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely, especially if you sew a lot of strip-based quilts. The Stripology XL ruler helps reduce mistakes, speed up your prep, and improve accuracy. It’s a tool that’s earned a permanent spot in my sewing space.
