Quilted Pillow Tutorial

Window In Time Quilt Pattern

|

Pillows are one of the best ways to add handmade charm to your home – and this quilted pillow pattern is fun and beginner-friendly! I remember when I first became a homeowner; I taught myself to sew simple pillow covers with just two large squares of fabric. It was a quick and easy way to fill my home with handmade touches. Fast forward to today, and I’m much more excited about cutting fabric into little pieces and sewing them back together to create quilted pillows! Once you’ve made one, you’ll be hooked, and before you know it, you’ll be making lap quilts, bed-sized quilts, and more pillows!

Window In Time quilted pillow pattern in blue, yellow and green fabric

This month’s pillow pattern was inspired by the playful yellow, orange, and green prints from the Teacher’s Pet fabric collection by Cloud9 Fabrics. The adorable dog prints practically begged me to fussy cut them — a technique where you cut fabric in a way that showcases a specific part of the print in your quilt block. It’s super fun and totally addictive!

Seriously, how cute are these fabrics?

Tools

  • Window In Time Quilted Pillow Pattern PDF
  • Sewing machine with 1/4″ foot (a walking foot is optional but incredibly helpful!) — I use a Bernina 440QE.
  • Iron — the Oliso M3Pro Project Steam Iron is a fun, cordless option.
  • Rotary Cutter — I love my OLFA 45mm Ergonomic Rotary Cutter for precision cuts.
  • Quilting Ruler — a Creative Grids Quilt Ruler (6 1/2 x 24 1/2 or 6 1/2 x 12 1/2) works great for accuracy.
  • Cutting Mat — I use the Creative Grids Self-Healing Cutting Mat (18” x 24”).
  • Sewing Pins — Dritz Glass Head Pins are my go-to.
  • Thread – I use Auriful, Sew-All Guterman, or Coats & Clark Dual Duty All Purpose Thread
  • Quilt Basting Pins — Dritz Quilting Curved Safety Pins and the Kwik Clip Tool make basting easy.
  • Pencil — for marking fabric.
