Honeycomb Pillow Pattern – Easy Lumbar Pillow with Zipper

What started as a simple favor for a friend turned into my new lumbar pillow sewing pattern. She loved my Snowball Pillow but needed a smaller size to fit perfectly in a chair. A few block tweaks and a zipper later, the Honeycomb Pillow was born!

This new pattern is a fun, quick sew that’s perfect for using charm squares or fat quarters, adding a pop of handmade charm to your home, and learning a zipper technique that’s beginner friendly.

Lapped Zipper Pillow Closure – Easy & Beginner-Friendly

This lumbar pillow sewing pattern includes a lapped zipper back—my favorite closure style after the classic envelope. It’s polished, secure, and best of all, easy to sew. If you’ve never sewn a zipper before, this is a great place to start. I walk you through the process with step-by-step photos to make it simple and stress-free.

That little pop of accent fabric on the zipper flap? It’s one of my favorite details—cute and functional!

Made with the Honey Garden Fabric Collection

The first sample I made features the Honey Garden fabric collection by Juliana Tipton for Cloud9 Fabrics. I absolutely love the colors and prints in this line—they work beautifully in this block layout.

I carry Honey Garden in both fat quarter and half yard bundles.

Quilting Details

For quilting, I kept it simple with my usual straight-line quilting spaced ½” apart. This is my go-to finish for all my pillows—it’s easy, looks great on any fabric, and adds just the right amount of texture.

Pattern Testing & Tech Editing

After writing the pattern, I always make a second sample to test it out and catch any small errors. This time, I used the Enchanted fabric collection by Heather Dutton for Cloud9 Fabrics—the prints are so fun to fussy cut!

I used a Cute Cuts square ruler by Riley Blake to highlight the little birds in the blocks. It’s a small touch, but it adds so much personality.

Once I’ve finished my sample, I hand the pattern over to my husband for technical editing (he’s an engineer!). He doesn’t sew, which makes him the perfect person to spot confusing directions and help me make every step as clear as possible.

I also carry Enchanted in fat quarter and half yard bundles, with some yardage available.
