Blockheads 6: Block 2 – Crossroads
I’m back to share my second block for the Moda Blockheads 6 quilt-along, and this week’s block is called Crossroads. It came together pretty smoothly, but I did make a couple of small tweaks along the way that I thought were worth noting.
The center unit is a quarter square triangle, and the cutting instructions had the pieces sized quite a bit larger than I’m used to. But once I saw how cleanly it trimmed down to 3½″, it made sense. According to the designer, Lynne from Kansas Troubles Quilters, the oversized pieces are intentional—so the outer edges aren’t on the bias. She recommends trimming by centering your ruler at the 1¾″ mark for a balanced, accurate square.

I used a 3½″ fussy cutting ruler to trim mine, and it worked perfectly!

I also made a small fabric change: instead of using just one print for the A pieces, I used two. It’s a subtle variation, but I love the bit of extra interest it adds to the finished block.

Here’s a photo of my Crossroads block, along with a peek at how it looks next to the first block, Regatta.

One of the things I really enjoy about Blockheads is that each block is designed by a different Moda designer. It makes the quilt feel like a true sampler—every week brings something new, and you can learn little tricks from each person’s style. It also keeps things interesting if you’re sewing along week to week, like I am.

I’m using the Folk & Lore collection by Fancy That Design House for this project, and I’ve loved how each fabric choice adds its own character to the blocks. I’ll be keeping the same blue, gold, and cream palette throughout the quilt. It’s fun to challenge myself to make each block feel balanced while sticking to that limited color scheme.

If you missed it, you can read more about my first Moda Blockheads block and fabric pull here. I’m so excited to keep sewing along with the Moda Blockheads quilt blocks and watching the quilt come together week by week.
Until next time, happy quilting!
