Blockheads 6: Block 4 and 5 – Cat’s Cradle & Dew Drop

|

Welcome back! Today I’m sharing my fourth and fifth blocks for Moda Blockheads 6 – Cat’s Cradle, and Dew Drop.

I’m all caught up now, and these two blocks were so fun to make. Dew Drop took a bit longer with all those half-square triangles. If I make it again I’ll probably choose a less busy background fabric since there’s a lot going on in that block. But once it’s pieced together with the others in the finished quilt, I doubt I’ll even notice.

Cat’s Cradle was a great block too. The directions for the half-rectangle units were clear and easy to follow. I recommend going step-by-step and marking your ruler with the dots, just like the instructions suggest, it really helped!

Here’s a photo of all my blocks so far. I’m using Folk & Lore by Fancy That Design House for Moda.

My Favorite Ruler for Trimming

When it comes to trimming half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles, my go-to is the Creative Grids 6½” square ruler. It’s just the right size for most of the projects I make.

For the Dew Drops block (step 3), you layout 4 triangles, sew them together, then trim them down to 3 1/2″. I used my Creative Grids ruler and lined up the center point of the quarter-square triangle unit at 1 3/4″ as shown below. If you don’t have this ruler yet, it’s definitely one to add to your toolbox. It makes trimming so much easier and more accurate!
