Blockheads 6: Block 6 – Moonbeam

|

Today I’m sharing my sixth block for Moda Blockheads 6, the Moonbeam block! I loved making this one, especially because I was able to turn the leftover triangles from the stitch-and-flip corners into two bonus star blocks. I’m planning to turn them into a zipper pouch, but that little project is still on my list for the weekend.

This week’s video from Moda included a great tip for saving and sewing half-square triangles from your stitch-and-flip corners. I followed that tip and ended up with enough HSTs to create two extra star blocks, perfect for small projects like a pouch or mini quilt.

If you’d like to make a 6 1/2″ unfinished star block like mine, here’s how I did it:

Bonus Star Block Instructions (6 1/2″ unfinished):

  • (16) Half-Square Triangles (HSTs) trimmed to 2″ (unfinished)

Arrange your HSTs in a 4×4 layout to form a LeMoyne-style star design. Play around with the placement until you like the look. Then sew the rows together, press, and join the rows to complete your block.

Each star finishes at 6 1/2″ square (unfinished), the perfect size for small projects like a zipper pouch, or a mug rug.

I plan to use these bonus star blocks to make a zipper pouch using my Iris Pouch pattern, which features a 6″ star block, making these little blocks the perfect size! While I haven’t gotten to that project yet, it’s definitely on my to-do list for the weekend.

Thanks for following along with my Moda Blockheads 6 journey. If you missed any earlier blocks, you can catch up on all my Moda Blockheads 6 blog posts here. I hope you find some inspiration for your own quilting projects!
